Metal-Free Fillings & Crowns

Most people will experience some sort of tooth decay in their lifetime. The course of treatment usually depends on the extent of decay, for example a dental filling may be done for minor to moderate decay, or a root canal may be needed when bacteria causes an infection deep in the root of the tooth.

Why Metal-Free Fillings and Crowns?

At Horizon Dental Arts, we use the highest quality metal-free fillings and crowns to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment, and the health of your teeth and gums. In the past, fillings and crowns were typically made from a composite of silver and mercury, and sometimes also tin and copper. These materials were once believed to be durable, but they have since proven to be unreliable and inconsistent. They tend to shrink or expand with hot and cold temperatures and weaken, come loose, or detach entirely. There is even a concern that the toxic mercury and other metals can leach out of the filling or crown and cause other health problems in the patient.

With advances in dental technology, new materials are now being used to fill cavities and make crowns. These materials include composite resin, porcelain, and ceramic. Some of the benefits of choosing these materials include:

  • More reliable, they do not expand and contract with different temperatures.
  • Less occurrence of an allergic reaction to these materials.
  • Reduced chance of bacteria finding their way under or into the crowns/fillings.
  • Less decay than was found with metal fillings/crowns.
